Grammar Rules for Reading Blanks: 


1). Noun : A word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.

Examples: 

Person: teacher, friend

Place: park, school

Thing: book, car Idea: love, happiness


2). Adjective : A word that describes or gives more information about a noun.

Describes noun: red car, happy child, expensive watch.


3). Verb : A word that shows an action, event, or state of being.

Action: run, jump


4). Helping Verb : 

A verb that helps the main verb to form tense, mood, or voice.

Helps verb: is reading, have finished, will go


5). Adverb : A word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

Describes verb: runs quickly

 Describes adjective: very cold Describes adverb: too late


6). Pronoun : A word that replaces a noun to avoid repetition.

 Examples: he, she, it, they, we, you, I


7). Possessive Pronoun : A pronoun that shows ownership or possession.

Examples: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs



Three forms of Verb

1st Form of verb:- Present or Simplest form of verb

Eg. Destroy, collect etc.

2nd form :- generally the past form of verb

Eg. Collected, destroyed, gave

3rd form of verb:- Past participle (ed) (en), Present participle (ing)

Eg. Collected, destroyed, giving etc.

Active/Passive Voice:-

1. Active Voice Subject+verb+object

Eg. Mark is playing cricket.

2. Passive Voice= Object comes in the beginning of the sentence.

Eg. Cricket is being played by Mark.

Passive voice = always 3rd form of verb.


Specific Rules: 

1. If there is a blank right after an article (a/an/the), there will always be a 'noun'. [Article (a/an/the) + Noun]

a. Gerard had a friend who helped him in the time of need.


2. If there is a Blank after “a/an”.

There will always be a singular noun in the blank.

a. He went to a party. (not parties)


3. If there is a blank between the article (a/an/the) and the noun, it will always be an 'adjective'. [Article (a/an/the) + Adjective + Noun]

a. Steve played a great role in the success of his team.


4. If there is a blank right after a possessive pronoun (his, their, her, our, mine, your, etc.), there will always be a 'noun'. [Possessive pronoun + Noun]

a. We will use his car tomorrow.


5. If there is a blank between a possessive pronoun (his, their, her, our, mine, your, etc.) and a noun, there will always be an 'adjective'. [Possessive pronoun + Adjective + Noun]

a. She admired your stellar performance in the last month.


6. If there is a blank right after the helping verb (HV) is/am/are/was/were, there will either be the 'third form' or 'continuous form of the verb' (with 'ing'). [HV + third or continuous form of verb]

a. John is playing football. (Active voice)

b. We were stranded in the mountains because of land sliding. (Passive voice)


7. If there is a blank right after the words be/been, there will either be the 'third form' or 'continuous form of the verb' (with 'ing'). [be/been + third or continuous form of verb]

a. They have been trying to solve the problem for two hours.

b. The project will be completed by next month.


8. If there is a blank right after the word 'to', it will be the 'first form of verb'. [To+ first form of the verb].

 a. I am here to represent my client.

b. Certain measures must be taken to rectify the situation.


9. If there is a blank after a modal verb "can/could/may/will/would/shall/should" it will be the 'first form of verb'.

a. I will come to the class tomorrow.

b. She can pass this exam easily.


10. If there is any blank after "for/while", it will be the continuous form of the verb' (with 'ing')

a. I want something for storing food.

b. While exploring the options, we met him.


11. If there is any blank after “has/have/had”, Use past participle of verb i.e. Verb ending with "ed" or 3rd form.

a. He has completed the homework.

b. She had gone to the market yesterday


12. If there is any blank after "it/which/that", use plural form of verb i.e. verb with s/es ending

a. It plays an important role.

b. Something which happens everyday.


13. Subject + would/could/should + have + v3+ object.

a. He could have done his work.

b. They should have done well.
